Due to it position about 500 metres above the sea level,
San
Martino al Cimino enjoys a pleasant and fresh climate.
Its location makes it an ideal place for a number of interesting
day trips.
In the summer it is possible to spend a day of fun and sunshine
on the nearby shores of the beautiful lakes of Vico and Bolsena
or at the beach in Tarquinia.
The surrounding
leefy sides of the Cimini mountains offer a similarly pleasant
shelter from the summer heat.
The majestic Cistercian Abbey located at
the heart of the village enjoys a magnificent view over the
whole of the Tuscia right down to the sea.
San Martino
is a small village just 4 km. from Viterbo
and 65 km. from Rome.
Its highlight is the Doria Pamphilij palace, which incorporated
part of the annexed convent (Romanesque portal) at the time
of Donna Olimpia Maidalchini Pamphilij, sister-in-law to pope
Innocenzo X.
Completely restored in 1652 by several artists
amongst whom Bernini, today the Abbey doubles up as an elegant
convention centre with rich lacunar halls, frescoes and a
monumental fireplace.
The village is a small architectural gem
as a consequence of the complete restoration its original
medieval centre underwent during the XVII cent. by mandate
of pope Innocenzo X who entrusted the architect Marcantonio
de’ Rossi to carry out the works in accordance with
contemporary town development.
