Viterbo
and the Spas:
The Medieval quarter of San Pellegrino,
the Popes’ Palace, the churches and the famous
fountains are just few among the many beauties you may
admire in the town of the Popes. The local spas have
state-of-the art, modern facilities. There are also
open-air spas that can be accessed free of charge.
The Lake of Vico:
Monte Fogliano
and Monte Venere are reflected in the crystal-clear
water of the Lake of Vico, which is the result of the
lively pre-historic volcanic activity that shaped the
whole area. The lake is about 12 km2, with a perimeter
of 18.8 km. The Lake of Vico is the third largest lake
in Latium, and it is suitable for bathing.
Historical homes, country
manors and castles:
Villa Lante in Bagnaia, Villa Farnese in Caprarola and
the Park of Monsters in Bomarzo are three late-Renaissance
architectural wonders with gardens, fountains, frescoes
and sculptures.
Many others castles and palaces, once the possession
of noblemen and high-rank clerics, contribute to make
up the truly remarkable local heritage: Orsini (Soriano
nel Cimino and Vasanello), Marescotti-Ruspoli (Vignanello),
Monaldeschi (Bolsena), Farnese (Caprarola, Gadoli, Valentano),
Borgia (Civitacastellana, Nepi), Odescalchi (Bassano
Romano), Albornoz (Viterbo), Santacroce-Altieri (Oriolo
Romano). The grand structures of Rocca dei Papi in Montefiascone
and the Castello dell’Abbadia in Vulci join this
impressive architectural roll of honour.
The Lake of Bolsena:
Bolsena
lake is the largest volcanic lake in Italy. Its
surface is 114 km2 and its depth may reach 151 m.
Two
small islands, Martana and Bisentina increase the lake’s
charms. Motor boating is allowed.
